Micro pins with a high aspect ratio (length over diameter) as these pins are no problem to be manufactured. The micro pins as presented, on the other hand, are unique by its density (4000 pins per cm2). These pins have a diameter of 60-70 micron and a height over 500 micrometer. This combination of density and ratio makes this part difficult or impossible to machine by other techniques.
Application
These type of parts can be used as brain implants, but the same technology is also developed for the film industry.
How it’s made
Small parts (<10cm2) can be manufactured by a special designed electrode, bigger sized parts (>100cm2) require a precise developed tools and flushing chambers to create a uniform pin structure.
Advantage of using ECM
By using ECM precise structures with high accuracy can be manufactured in 1 single step with one axis in different type of material, an alternative would be micro milling. With ECM the machining time is less the 20 minutes for a surface > 10cm2.
